Comparing path-based and vertically-partitioned RDF databases

چکیده
Given the increasing prevalence of RDF data formats for storing and sharing data on the Semantic Web, efficient storage mechanisms for RDF data are also becoming increasingly important. We survey existing storage solutions for RDF data in an RDMS. Two recent and novel storage concepts open the door for significantly better querying efficiency. The first, proposed by Matono, et al (2005), models RDF data as a graph, then stores materialized path expressions for efficient querying. The second, proposed by Abadi, et al (2007), stores RDF triples in a vertically-partitioned column-oriented database, in which each RDF property is stored in a single table. We compare these two storage methods to find relative strengths and weaknesses on a wide range of possible queries.

Scalable Semantic Web Data Management Using Vertical Partitioning
Efficient management of RDF data is an important factor in realizing the Semantic Web vision. Performance and scalability issues are becoming increasingly pressing as Semantic Web technology is applied to real-world applications. In this paper, we examine the reasons why current data management solutions for RDF data scale poorly, and explore the fundamental scalability limitations of these app...
متن کاملScalable and Efficient Self-Join Processing technique in RDF data
Efficient management of RDF data plays an important role in successfully understanding and fast querying data. Although the current approaches of indexing in RDF Triples such as property tables and vertically partitioned solved many issues; however, they still suffer from the performance in the complex self-join queries and insert data in the same table. As an improvement in this paper, we prop...
متن کاملA Path-based Relational RDF Database
We propose a path-based scheme for storage and retrieval of RDF data using a relational database. The Semantic Web is much anticipated as the nextgeneration web where high-level processing of web resources are enabled by underlying metadata described in RDF format. A typical application of RDF is to describe ontologies or dictionaries, but in such applications, the size of RDF data is large. As...
متن کاملColumn-store support for RDF data management: not all swans are white
This paper reports on the results of an independent evaluation of the techniques presented in the VLDB 2007 paper “Scalable Semantic Web Data Management Using Vertical Partitioning”, authored by D. Abadi, A. Marcus, S. R. Madden, and K. Hollenbach [1]. We revisit the proposed benchmark and examine both the data and query space coverage. The benchmark is extended to cover a larger portion of the...
متن کاملAn Experimental Comparison of RDF Data Management Approaches in a SPARQL Benchmark Scenario
Efficient RDF data management is one of the cornerstones in realizing the Semantic Web vision. In the past, different RDF storage strategies have been proposed, ranging from simple triple stores to more advanced techniques like clustering or vertical partitioning on the predicates. We present an experimental comparison of existing storage strategies on top of the SPBench SPARQL performance benc...
